Entry #4: Text Connections
The novel has a text-to-world connection in its portrayal of war and the current war in Middle Eastern countries. In the novel's portrayal of war it shows the devastation and damage it has the ability to cause to individuals, towns, and countries. In addition, it also gives an honest portrayal of soldiers during both their time spent fighting and handling the deaths of their fallen soldiers as well as in their down time, which often includes time spent with women. The portrayal of soldiers handling death is shown when Henry was bombed and Passini died as a result, and in a state of shock, Henry kept repeating that Passini was dead. Any soldier that has experienced death first hand could relate to Henry's shock during that time. The representation of soldiers in their down time is best exemplified in Rinaldi and his quest for women which eventually resulted in him becoming infected with syphilis, which does not necessarily mean that modern day soldiers have a tendency to become infected with sexually transmitted diseases, just that even in modern times, sexual relations between men and women during war time is still a big issue.

I appreciate your insightful connection to the war in the middle east today. The emotions of the soldiers in world war II are almost identical to today's war. Humans will always react with the same type of sensitivity when another individual close to that person dies. Also, men will always have the same desires of women no matter the age. For as long as people have morals, war will always be a similar emotional and tragic experience no matter what the era is.
ReplyDeleteDeath during a war can be hard, especially for those that experience it firsthand. When you go to war, you usually do everything with the people in your unit, and they eventually become like family. When you lose someone close to you, you never fully recover. Usually people try to find a way of escaping or coping with the loss that they have experienced, and this is not always done in the best way. As you mentioned, a big issue during times of war are the sexual relations between men and women. It is hard to go for long periods of time without seeing the ones you care about the most, and when you do see each other, you try to be together in every possible way.
